Origin and history

The Marsillargues arenas, located in the Herault department in the Occitanie region, were built in 1960 by the municipality. They replace ephemeral urban furniture installed since the end of the 19th century for "cocard races", a local festive tradition dating back to revolutionary festivals. These quadrilateral round-angle arenas consist of a scaffolding of metal tubes and boards, which can accommodate more than 800 spectators. Their central location, between the church, the town hall, the 16th century castle and a café, makes it an emblematic gathering place for the community.

The arenas bear the name of Marcel Guillarmet, a gardian (guardian of bulls) from the Marsillargue wager of the Laurent manade, in tribute to his role in the local Tauromachi tradition. Their structure includes practical arrangements such as a summary infirmary in the backyard of a nearby bistro, while the toril (enclosure for bulls) is aligned with the coffee front. These characteristics, studied by the ethnologist Frédéric Saumade, illustrate their perfect adaptation to the model of the Camargua races, or Bovine, a cultural practice rooted in Lower Languedoc.

Ranked a historic monument since February 22, 1993 for their "ethnological interest", the arenas protect the ground of the square, the barriers delimiting the track, and the surrounding facades. Their preservation underscores the heritage importance of the monuments linked to the bovin, a tradition combining breeding, popular festivals and regional identity. In addition to the races, they host various shows, perpetuating their role as a place of sociability and living culture.

The 1960 construction marked a transition to a permanent structure, replacing the temporary installations built by the inhabitants and the municipality during the holidays. This development reflects the gradual institutionalisation of Tauromachi practices in Languedoc, while maintaining their Community dimension. The arenas, a mixed property (common, private and private), remain a symbol of local life, between historical heritage and contemporary adaptations.
