In total, the market located at Rivière-Pilote, on Parcel No.433, shown in cadastre section A: inscription by order of January 10, 2020

Origin and history

The Rivière-Pilot covered market is a public building built in the 1930s to house local commercial activities. Located in the heart of the village, on the Avenue des Insurrections-Anti-Esclavatrices, it plays a central role in the economic and social life of the municipality. A floodmark, visible on one of its metal poles, bears witness to the past floods that marked the history of the site.

Ranked as Historic Monuments by order of 16 November 2018, then modified on 10 January 2020 for a cadastral correction, this market embodies the utility architecture of the 20th century Martinique. Its protection covers the whole of Parcel No. 433, stressing its heritage importance for the commune and the region.

Owned by the municipality of Rivière-Pilote, the market is part of a historical context where covered markets served as places of gathering, exchange and cultural resistance. Its recent inscription reflects a desire to preserve this heritage linked to the social and economic history of Martinique, particularly in an area marked by anti-slavery struggles.
