Origin and history
The Mas de Brau, located in Mouriès in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, is an emblematic monument of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the 16th century, this farmhouse illustrates the Provencal rural architecture of this period, marked by stone constructions and an organization adapted to local agricultural activities. It has been included in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 1932, with enhanced protection for its southern facade and roof in 1938.
In the 16th century, the Provencal region was mainly oriented towards agriculture, including olive and vine cultivation. The mas, like the one in Brau, served as a nerve centre for farms, sheltering both houses, outbuildings and storage spaces. These constructions reflected the social and economic organization of rural communities, where the work of the land structured daily life.
The Mas de Brau was the subject of two distinct levels of protection: a general inscription in 1932, covering the entire building with the exception of the parts already classified, and a specific classification in 1938 for its southern facade and roof. These measures highlight the heritage value of the building, both architecturally and historically, and demonstrate its importance in the local cultural landscape.
Today, the Mas de Brau remains a valuable testimony of Provencal rural history. Although the practical information on its visit or current use is not specified in the available sources, its status as a Historic Monument makes it a place of interest in the preservation of the regional heritage.
