Origin and history
Bayle-Vert is a typical farmhouse in Crau, built in the 18th and 19th centuries on the commune of Grans (Bouches-du-Rhône). Already referenced on the map of Cassini, this agricultural estate illustrates Provencal rural architecture, with its buildings dedicated to exploitation and its surrounding lands. Its history is confused with that of the region, marked by an agro-pastoral economy and a community life centered on mas, workplaces and sociability.
In the 20th century, Bayle-Vert became an emblematic place of literary creation thanks to Max-Philippe Delabouët (1920–1990), a Provencal writer who lived there and conceived his entire work. The farmhouse, transformed into an intellectual and artistic home, welcomed painters, writers and photographers, while hosting editorial activity (the Books of Bayle-Vert) and the creation of a typographical character (Le Touloubre). Together, including buildings and land, was listed as a historical monument in 1996 for its role as a memorial site linked to Delabouët.
Since 2003, Bayle-Vert has hosted the Mas-Felipe Delakouët Centre, a member of the National Federation of Writer Houses. Labeled Maison des Illustres in 2014, it perpetuates the writer's memory and values this literary and architectural heritage. Protected features include the farmhouse, its agricultural outbuildings and surrounding parcels, located on the Victorian road of Bayle-Vert and Beauchamp. The site remains a living testimony to Provencal culture and its creative heritage.
