Origin and history

The mas du Grand Galès is an agricultural estate mentioned since the 15th century, located in Montclus in the Gard. Its architecture, adapted to local constraints, makes it a representative example of farms in limestone. Access to the estate is via a walkway lined with fruit trees, while buildings, organised around a central courtyard, incorporate functional elements such as a rainwater recovery system.

The entrance gate, whose arch in the middle of the arch was redone in 1828, gives access to a courtyard surrounded by stables and vaulted cellars. In the 19th century, the second level of the master's house was home to a silkworm rearing magnate, illustrating the adaptation of spaces to local economic activities. The facades and roofs of the farmhouse were listed as historical monuments by order of 5 November 1990.

This area reflects the traditional organisation of farms in Occitanie, where water, crops and livestock (such as sericulture) structured daily life. Its hydraulic system, combined with spaces dedicated to agricultural and artisanal activities, demonstrates pragmatic engineering, typical of the rural constructions of the region.
