Origin and history
The Brigueuil mausoleum, dated from the 12th century, is distinguished by its irregular polygonal shape and its dome cover. Inside, a table supports a sarcophagus whose lid has a bas-relief representing a lying bust, with arms raised towards the head. This funeral monument, now located in a barn in the hamlet of La Boulomie, bears witness to the architectural and artistic practices of the medieval period in Poitou-Charentes.
The façades of the mausoleum are pierced blind arcades, initially opened and closed later, framed by columns and mouldings in boudin. These decorative elements, typical of the 12th century, suggest a desire to monumentalize the burial, perhaps for a character of local importance. The building, classified as Historic Monument in 1932, remains a rare example of medieval mausoleum maintaining its original structure and sculptural details.
The current location of the mausoleum, in a barn in the hamlet of La Boulomie in Brigueuil, reflects the changes in the uses of historic buildings over the centuries. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are limited (located as "passable"), it is a remarkable heritage for the study of Romanesque funerary art in New Aquitaine. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments underscores its heritage value, despite the absence of accurate data on its sponsor or deceased.
