Origin and history

The Mediterranean Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of Cassis finds its origins in the artistic donations of the early twentieth century. Founded in 1910 thanks to the initiative of local painters, it is part of the regional heritage development movement, typical of the time, where municipal museums emerge to preserve traditional works and know-how. The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a turning point for provincial museums, often created by private donations.

In Cassis, this project is anchored in a context where the Mediterranean and Provencal identity is celebrated, especially through pictorial art. The original collections reflect this attachment, with works by Marin Guindon, Eugénie Guindon, or Felix Ziem, artists related to the region or sensitive to its landscapes. The museum was gradually enriched by bequests and acquisitions, such as that of Raphaël Ponson, whose widow contributed in 1910.

These contributions diversify the funds, integrating representations of local life, coastal landscapes, and scenes of popular traditions. The institution thus becomes a witness to the cultural exchanges between Provence and other Mediterranean regions, as evidenced by the views of Venice offered by Ziem. Throughout the 20th century, the museum evolved to include ethnographic objects, supplementing the pictorial collections.

Its role is strengthened in preserving the arts and traditions, while adapting to the expectations of an increasingly touristic audience. Cassis, a renowned seaside resort, offers a place where artistic heritage and regional identity blend together. Today, the museum remains a major cultural player in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

It participates in the presentation of the intangible Mediterranean heritage, while attracting visitors through its historical anchor and eclectic collection. Although less publicized than other provencal museums, it is an essential step in understanding art and local traditions.
