Origin and history

The megalithic site of the Lande du Gras, located in Meslin in the Côtes-d'Armor (Bretagne), is a remarkable archaeological complex dating from the Neolithic and Iron Age. Within a 500-metre radius, it gathers four covered aisles, two menhirs and a probable tumular tertre, all built in eocene sandstone. The most well-known covered aisle, La Guigne Folle, is 16 metres long and was partially excavated in 1865, revealing a polished axe, archer armband and fragments of campaniform ceramic.

The La Guigne Folle alley has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1962, while the entire site was listed in 1996. Nearby, a small menhir of 1.15 m and a second covered aisle, called the Champ des Caves (14 m), are oriented southwest/northeast. A third driveway, ruined, was associated with the menhir La Chaise à Margot (2.05 m), and a fourth, disappeared around 1885, was searched in 1842. Prospects also revealed artifacts from the Neolithic and Iron Age.

The site is also of geological interest with an outcrop of glossy sandstone rare in Brittany. Historically, he was linked to the caulianry, with Hoche's army setting up a camp there. The scattered blocks could be the remains of an abrased tumular tertrine, while flint tools, now preserved at the Saint-Brieuc Museum, testify to its ancient occupation.
