Origin and history

The memorial to Paul Nozal is a limestone sculpture erected by architect Hector Guimard in the early 20th century. Located in the commune of Tâtre (Charente), this 2 metre high terminal marked the tragic location of a car accident on 13 July 1903, where 27-year-old Paul Nozal, a pilot and heir to an industrial dynasty, lost his life. The monument, adorned with Hermes wings and a mechanic cap, symbolizes both speed and family mourning.

Paul Nozal belonged to an influential family, patron of Hector Guimard, known for his Art Nouveau achievements as the warehouses of the Saint-Denis Plain. After the accident, his parents, Leon and Marguerite, made an annual pilgrimage to the scene. The stele, originally placed on the RN10, was damaged in the 1960s, moved and then resettled in 1988. It was listed as historical monuments on April 9, 2021, becoming the only architectural testimony of Guimard in New Aquitaine.

The design of the monument combines mythological references (wings of Hermes, messenger god) and industrial (pilot helmet), reflecting the era of automotive pioneers. The limestone, noble material, and the interlaces recall the Art Nouveau style dear to Guimard. After decades forgotten, its restoration and recent protection underline its heritage importance, linked to the history of transport, industry and decorative arts in France.

Unique in the region, this monument also illustrates the links between patronage and innovation at the turn of the 20th century. The Nozals, sponsors of Guimard for Parisian projects, embody this alliance between industrial fortune and artistic avant-garde. Today, the boundary, a communal property, remains a discreet but poignant homage to a life shattered by the technical progress that it celebrated.
