Origin and history
The Menainville megalithic tumulus, located in Tillay-le-Péneux (Eure-et-Loir), is a neolithic funerary vestige. This type of monument, characteristic of this period, was generally used as a collective burial and bears witness to the ritual and social practices of local prehistoric communities. Its architecture, composed of stones and earth, reflects the construction techniques of the time, adapted to the resources available in the region.
Ranked Historic Monument by Order of October 22, 1980, this tumulus is subject to heritage protection because of its archaeological importance. The tumulus, like that of Menainville, were often places of memory for neolithic populations, playing a central role in the territorial and spiritual organization of the communities. Their presence in the landscape marks an ancient and sustainable human occupation, linked to agricultural and craft activities emerging during this pivotal period of prehistory.
