Menhir de Traon-Bihan (cad. G 742): entry by order of 13 October 1956
Origin and history
The Menhir de Traon-Bihan, located in Plougasnou in Finistère, is an emblematic vestige of the Neolithic period. This megalithic monument, typical of Breton prehistoric architecture, was erected by local communities for reasons still debated (territorial marker, place of worship, or funeral monument). Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1956 underlines its heritage and archaeological importance.
In the Neolithic era, Brittany was a densely populated region where agro-pastoral societies organized their territory around stone monuments. Menhirs, often associated with alignments or dolmens, probably played a symbolic or ritual role in community life. Their construction reflected a remarkable technical mastery, as well as a social organization capable of mobilizing important human and material resources.
The menhir of Traon-Bihan is located precisely at 4 Chemin de Traon Bian, in the commune of Plougasnou (code Insee 2918), in the department of Finistère. Although its GPS location is considered "passable" (note of 5/10), it remains accessible and is part of the protected elements of the local heritage, as evidenced by its cadastre (park G 742). No information is available about his current access or related services (visits, accommodation).
