Origin and history
The Menhir du Cheval gris, located in Chambain, Côte d'Or, is one of the few megaliths listed as historical monuments of the Châtillon region. Dated from Neolithic, it is 2.30 meters high for 1.60 meters wide. It is located near the tumulus called Bosse-de-Menley, showing a significant prehistoric occupation in this area.
The Châtillonnais, known for its archaeological sites of the ages of metals like Vix or Vertillum, also houses several menhirs. Three of them, including the Grey Horse, were classified in 1923. This menhir, owned by the commune, illustrates the importance of megalithic constructions in this region, where stones erected and tumulus mark the landscape for millennia.
In addition to menhirs, the Châtillonnais has other prehistoric remains, such as rock shelters or neolithic ditches. These discoveries, combined with cut flint and animal bones (mammouths, woolly rhinoceros), confirm an ancient human presence. The menhir of the Grey Horse is thus part of a wider set of traces left by the Neolithic societies in this part of Burgundy.
