Origin and history

The Menhir de Couëbrac is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Nozay, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. This white, pink-veined quartz block, 2.80 m high, is located at the end of a rocky promontory near the creek of Cetray. It was first reported in 1881 by local historian Alcide Leroux, who brought it to the attention of Pitre de Lisle du Dreneuc during his visit to the site.

Menhir was classified as historical monuments by order of 20 October 1928. It is implanted in a landscape marked by shale outcrops and a small gorge, now partially exploited. Its mineral composition, including traces of cassiterite, and its dimensions (2.15 m wide for 60 to 75 cm thick) make it a remarkable example of the megalithic sites of Loire-Atlantique.

The precise location of the menhir on the right bank of Villatte Creek has been documented in the Merimée base. Although its exact use remains uncertain, this type of monument reflects the cultural and religious practices of the neolithic societies of the region, linked to the organization of the territory and funeral or symbolic beliefs.
