Origin and history
The Denhir de Désertines is a megalith erected during the Neolithic period, marked by the emergence of agriculture and the first organized social structures. Located in the village of Désertines in Mayenne, this monument bears witness to the cultural and religious practices of local prehistoric communities. Its location on the church square suggests symbolic continuity between ancient beliefs and later Christianity.
This menhir was Christianized in an undetermined period, as evidenced by the patty and nimbly cross carved on one of its faces. This transformation reflects a common practice in the Middle Ages, where pagan monuments were reappropriated to serve the new dominant religion. Menhir was classified as historic monuments on November 24, 1924, recognizing its heritage and archaeological value.
Today, the Menhir de Désertines belongs to the commune and remains accessible to the public. Its precise location, Church Square, and its approximate address (2 Rue du Maine) are documented in heritage databases such as Mérimée. This monument illustrates both the megalithic heritage of the Pays de la Loire region and the successive strata of its religious and cultural history.
