Origin and history
The Menhir de Goulvarc'h is a block of granite erected during the Neolithic period, located in the commune of Quiberon, Morbihan department. A height of 5.10 metres, it has a rectangular base of 2.60 m by 1 m, typical of the megalithic constructions of this period. Its exact location is reported at 9004 Chemin de la Trepetinière, although the accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (level 6/10).
This menhir was listed as historic monuments by an order of 6 December 1978, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Available sources, including Monumentum and Wikipedia, rely on the work of Philippe Gouézin (2007), who documents the megaliths of the Morbihan coast. The monument, although protected, does not have detailed information on its accessibility or current tourist vocation in the source texts.
Neolithic in Brittany was marked by an agropastoral society where megaliths probably played a symbolic, funeral or territorial role. Menhirs, such as that of Gouvarcoh, testify to the collective organization and beliefs of the communities of the time, although their exact function often remains hypothetical in the absence of written sources. Their dense distribution in the Morbihan makes it an emblematic heritage of the region.
