Origin and history
The Menhir de la Gérafia, located in La Souterraine in the Creuse (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is in reality a pillar of medieval granite jurisdiction, although it is sometimes mistakenly associated with the Neolithic period. Ranked a historic monument in 1889, it stands at Puy de la Justice, on the edge of the ancient medieval road linking Limoges to La Souterraine. Its prismatic shape, with slightly rounded corners, and its modest dimensions (base of 40x32 cm, 27x25 cm apex) make it an atypical object for a menhir.
This boundary probably materialized the boundary between two jurisdictional entities: the Viscounty of Bridiers and the Prevost of La Souterraine, the latter dependent on the monks of Saint-Martial de Limoges. Its role was therefore administrative and symbolic, delimiting territories under separate authorities. Although its exact dating remains uncertain, it falls within a broad time range covering the Middle Ages, with no additional precision.
The monument illustrates the feudal and religious organization of the region, where local lords and ecclesiastical institutions (such as the Abbey of Saint-Martial) shared power. Its early ranking in 1889 underscores its heritage importance, despite the persistent confusion about its real nature. Today, there remains a tangible testimony of medieval judicial structures in Limousin, although its state of conservation and exact location (noted as satisfactory a priori) call for special vigilance.
