Origin and history

The Menhir de la Grande-Pierre is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Saint-Aubin, in the department of the Aube, in the Grand Est region. With a height of 3.20 meters, a width of 1.58 meters and a thickness of 0.70 meters, it is the largest menhir in the department. Dressed by the men of the Seine-Oise-Marne civilization, it is about 75 meters from the Ardusson River, its main face being oriented towards the northeast.

Menhir was listed as a historic monument on 14 May 1993, recognizing its heritage importance. It is located in the middle of the fields, in a rural environment, and reflects the cultural and religious practices of the Neolithic societies of the region.

The Seine-Oise-Marne civilization, to which this menhir is attributed, is known for its megalithic constructions and complex social organization. These monuments probably served as territorial landmarks, places of worship or burials, reflecting a society structured around collective beliefs and practices.

Available sources, including D. Jourdain's work and data from the Merimée database, confirm its precise location at approximately 15 Rue des Charrons, 10400 Saint-Aubin. Menhir is now protected and is part of the megalithic heritage of the Champagne-Ardenne region (Great East).

Its registration as a Historic Monument in 1993 preserved this exceptional vestige, while offering researchers and the public a material testimony of local prehistoric cultures. The location, noted as satisfactory (precision 7/10), facilitates its access and study.

This menhir is part of a wider set of megalithic sites in the Dawn, illustrating the archaeological richness of this area and its role in the history of the first agricultural and sedentary societies in France.
