Menhir (Case C 538) : Order of 25 May 1976
Origin and history
The menhir de la Petite Thébauderie is a megalith located in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers, in the department of Mayenne (Pays de la Loire). This monument dated Neolithic is located at La Petite Thébauderie, about 2.5 km southwest of the village, on the boundary of commune. It is located in a field adjacent to the farm of Petite Thébauderie, accessible only by this property, and is not visible from the road. Its geographical isolation and limited access make it a little known site to the general public, despite its archaeological interest.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 25 May 1976, the menhir is 1.60 m high. This official ranking underscores its heritage importance in the Mayenne megalithic landscape. The site is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 53256, attached to the commune of Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers. The GPS coordinates available place the monument near the Frogerie, but the accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (level 5/10).
The Menhir de la Petite Thébauderie is part of a wider set of megalithic sites in Mayenne. These monuments, erected in Neolithic, bear witness to the cultural and religious practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. Their preservation allows us to study the construction techniques and spatial organization of the communities of the time. Although little specifically documented, this menhir contributes to understanding the local megalithic heritage, alongside other sites classified in the department.
