Origin and history
The Menhir de la pointe d'Er-Limouzen is a megalithic vestige emblematic of Neolithic, located in the municipality of Quiberon, Morbihan (Brittany). This monument, consisting of a single block of granite measuring 2.60 m high for 1.20 m wide and 0.50 m thick, illustrates the architectural and cultural practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. Its erection dates back to a period when local communities organized their territory around symbolic or funeral landmarks, although its exact function remains debated by archaeologists.
The menhir was officially recognized for its heritage value by a classification order for historic monuments on 1 June 1931. This legal protection underlines its importance in the Breton archaeological landscape, alongside other megalithic sites on the Morbihan coast. Today owned by the municipality of Quiberon, it is located precisely at the tip of Er-Limousen, near the coastal road, and remains accessible to the public, although its exact location is considered "fair" in terms of cartographic accuracy.
Available sources, including Philippe Gouézin's work in Les megalithes du Morbihan littoral (2007), confirm his membership in a wider set of prehistoric monuments in the region. These books and databases such as Mérimée or Monumentum provide technical and historical details, while highlighting the lack of information about its associated erection or ritual context. Menhir thus embodies both a material heritage and a riddle for contemporary researchers.
