Menhir, as well as a 10-metre perimeter around the megalith (Box ZE 2): registration by order of 7 December 2000

Origin and history

The Menhir de Mécren is a megalithic monument erected during the Neolithic period, marked by the emergence of agriculture and livestock in Europe. Located in the commune of Mécren, in the department of the Meuse (Great East region), this menhir is representative of the monumental buildings of this time, often associated with ritual, funeral or symbolic functions. Its placement in the landscape reflects the choices of the Neolithic communities, which favoured visible or strategic places for these buildings.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 7 December 2000, the Menhir de Mécrin is protected with a perimeter of 10 meters around him. This legal protection underlines its heritage and archaeological importance. Although the available sources do not specify its exact use, menhirs were generally related to collective practices, such as ceremonies, territorial markings or tributes to ancestors.

Approximate location and limited cartographic accuracy (noted 5/10) indicate that further studies could refine understanding of its historical and geographic context.
