Origin and history

Menhir de Men-en-Palud is a megalithic monument erected during the Neolithic period, located in the commune of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys, Morbihan department. This erect stone block, typical of the buildings of this time, bears witness to the cultural and religious practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. Its height of 3 meters makes it a modest but representative example of the Breton menhirs.

The menhir was recognized for its heritage importance and was listed as historic monuments by an order dated 10 April 1969. This official protection underscores its archaeological value and its role in understanding ancient civilizations. The site is located precisely at 6765 Route de Clos Er Be, in a rural environment typical of the Gulf of Morbihan.

Menhirs, like Men-en-Palud, were often associated with ritual or commemorative functions in neolithic societies. Their location in the landscape probably reflected symbolic choices related to the territorial organization or beliefs of the communities of the time. In Brittany, these monuments are particularly numerous, illustrating a high concentration of megalithic sites in this region.

Available sources, including bibliographical references such as the inventory of protected archaeological sites in Morbihan (1994-1995), provide further details of its historical context. However, little precise information remains on the exact circumstances of its erection or its specific use by local populations.
