Origin and history

Men Glas Menhir is an iconic megalithic monument located in the town of Erdeven, Morbihan department. Dated from Neolithic, it reflects the architectural and cultural practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. This block of granite, erect vertically, is 3.80 meters high for a rectangular base of 1.60 m by 1 m, illustrating the technical mastery of the builders of the period.

The menhir was officially recognized for its heritage value and listed as a historical monument by an order of 24 July 2023. This legal protection underlines its importance in the Breton archaeological landscape, where there are many megalithic sites. The monument is referenced in official inventories, especially in the Mérimée base, under the code Insee 56054 corresponding to the town of Erdeven.

Sources available, such as the book The megaliths of the Morbihan coast of Philippe Gouézin (2007) confirm its membership in a wider set of megalithic sites characteristic of the Morbihan coast. These monuments, often linked to ritual or commemorative functions, reflect the social and spiritual organization of neolithic communities. Their preservation allows us to study the traditions and beliefs of this distant period.
