Menhir de la Pierre l'Ogre, at the limit of the communes of Montplanne and Nant-le-Grand : classification by decree of 5 July 1924

Origin and history

The Menhir de la Pierre l'Ogre is a megalithic vestige dated from Neolithic, a period marked by the emergence of agriculture and the first sedentary societies. This type of monument, erected by local communities, probably served as a territorial landmark, place of worship or symbol of power. Menhirs, isolated erect stones, are characteristic of European prehistoric landscapes, although their exact function is often mysterious.

Located on the border of the communes of Montplanne and Nant-le-Grand, in the department of Meuse (Great East region), this menhir was classified as Historical Monument by ministerial decree on 5 July 1924. This official protection reflects its heritage and archaeological importance. The precise location, although noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), remains approximate, reflecting the documentation challenges of older sites.

The menhir is now owned by the municipality, without any indication of its current accessibility or tourist development.
