Origin and history

The Menhir dit de la Ville-l'Évêque, also known as Pierre de la Folie, is a megalithic monument located in the municipality of Berchères-sur-Vesgre, in the department of Eure-et-Loir. Neolithic data, this imposing monolith is 4.30 meters high for 3.10 meters wide and 1 meter thick maximum. It reflects the cultural and religious practices of prehistoric societies in the region.

Ranked as historic monuments by order of 30 March 1887, this menhir illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of prehistoric heritage by the end of the 19th century. Its alternative name, Pierre de la Folie, evokes local legends or popular beliefs associated with this type of monument, although these are not detailed in the available sources.

The menhir is located precisely at the approximate address of 217 F La Remission du Lienge, on the cadastre section F, Parcel 31. This location, although noted as having poor accuracy (level 5/10), allows to identify the site in the landscape of Berchères-sur-Vesgre. The monument does not seem open to specific services such as guided tours or accommodation, according to current information.
