Origin and history
The Menhir du Moustoir, also known as the Menhir de Parc-er-Mané, is an iconic megalithic monument located in Carnac, Morbihan department. This conical monolith, about 3.3 metres high, is a remarkable testimony of neolithic architecture. It is located near the tumulus of the Moustoir, about 30 meters southwest, and is one of the many megalithic sites of the region.
The menhir was straightened in 1919 by archaeologist Zacharie Le Rouzic, a major figure in the study of Carnac's megaliths. According to his research, a second menhir, formerly east of the neighbouring tumulus, was destroyed around 1898. The Menhir du Moustoir was classified as historic monuments by an order of 10 May 1926, thereby recognizing its heritage importance.
This monument is part of a larger set of megalithic sites in Morbihan, a region particularly rich in prehistoric remains. Menhirs, often associated with ritual or commemorative functions, reflect the cultural and social practices of neolithic communities. Their presence in Carnac, where we find one of the highest concentrations of megaliths in the world, underlines the importance of this territory in European prehistory.
Available sources, including Zacharie Le Rouzic's work and official references such as the Merimée base, confirm the authenticity and historical value of the menhir. Its approximate address, 80 Route du Moustoir à Carnac, allows to locate it in an environment still marked by the presence of many other prehistoric monuments.
