Origin and history
The Menhir du Perron is a megalithic monument located in Passais, now part of the new town of Passais Villages, in the department of l'Orne in Normandy. This block of diorite, measuring 3 meters high, dates from Neolithic, a period marked by the erection of many stone monuments by prehistoric societies. Its exact location is reported at Le Perron, and it is referenced in heritage bases under INSEE 61324.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 15 June 1926, the menhir du Perron is one of the protected archaeological remains of the area. Its ranking is part of a process of preserving megaliths, often threatened by erosion or human activities. Historical sources, such as the Inventory of Megalithic Monuments of the Orne published by Léon Coutier in 1926, attest to its importance in the local heritage.
The Menhir's description highlights its diorite composition, a magmatic rock common in the region, and its remarkable height for this type of monument. Although the precise uses of this menhir remain uncertain, the megaliths of Neolithic were generally associated with ritual, funeral or territorial functions. Today, it is a tangible testimony to the cultural practices of the prehistoric communities of Lower Normandy.
