Menhir du Petit Moustoir (Box ZN 16): by order of 6 August 1969
Origin and history
The Menhir du Petit Moustoir is a megalithic vestige erected during the Neolithic period, marked by the emergence of agriculture and livestock in Europe. Located in the commune of Roudouallec, in Morbihan, this monument illustrates the funeral and symbolic practices of prehistoric Breton societies. Its establishment probably reflects a deliberate choice linked to ritual or territorial considerations, typical of this time.
Ranked under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 6 August 1969, the menhir du Petit Moustoir enjoys legal protection which underlines its heritage importance. Menhirs, isolated erect stones, were often associated with cults or landmarks in the landscape, although their exact function sometimes remains enigmatic. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the techniques of size and transport of megaliths, as well as the social organization of neolithic communities in Brittany.
