Origin and history
The Menhir de Kerguezennec is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Bcon regard, in the department of Côtes-d'Armor in Brittany. Built in Neolithic, it stands out for its height of 6.25 meters and its cylindrical shape, rounding from 5 meters. Composed of local granite extracted at Plouaret, it was transported for about 500 meters to be installed on a hillside with shale substrate. A vertical crack due to erosion crosses its height.
Ranked as historical monuments since 1889, this menhir illustrates the ingenuity of neolithic populations in the extraction and transport of massive stones. Its location at the top of a hillside suggests a desire for visibility or symbolism, typical of the megaliths of this period. Studies, like those of Loïc Langouët, underline its importance in the megalithic landscape of the Guingamp district.
The site is referenced in the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, with an approximate location in Kerwezhenneg (22140 Bcon regard). Although its exact function remains unknown, this type of monument was probably linked to ritual or commemorative practices. Its state of conservation, despite the crack, allows to appreciate its imposing structure, witness to the Breton prehistory.
