Four Men-Roquil menhirs (Box ZW 89): Order of 18 November 1963

Philippe Gouézin - Author and archaeologist Mentioned the site in *Megaliths of the coastal Morbihan* (2007)

Origin and history

Menhirs de Men-Roquil are a megalithic complex located in Plouhinec, Morbihan department, Britain. Data from Neolithic, this alignment consists of four menhirs, two of which are currently lying down and two others bent. The exact orientation of this alignment remains undetermined, but its exceptional character led to its classification as historical monuments on 18 November 1963.

The site is mentioned in specialized works such as Les megalithes du Morbihan littoral (2007) by Philippe Gouézin, who places it among the remarkable ensembles of the region. Menhirs, typical of Breton megalithic architecture, bear witness to the cultural and religious practices of local neolithic societies. Their preservation raises questions about their original function, often associated with funeral or astronomical rites.

The precise location of the menhirs is indicated as being close to the so-called place 7 Keroue in Plouhinec, although the cartographic accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10). The site, protected by the State, is an integral part of the archaeological heritage of Morbihan, a region rich in prehistoric remains. No information is available on its current accessibility or related services (visits, accommodation).

The 1963 classification specifically covers the four Men-Roquil menhirs, referenced under the ZW 89 cadastral plot. This legal status guarantees their conservation, while integrating them into national inventories such as the Merimée database. Their study contributes to a better understanding of Breton megalithic networks, often linked to sacred landscapes or territorial markers.

Although the sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not provide details on recent excavations or specific archaeological discoveries, the site remains an emblematic example of the neolithic heritage in Brittany. Its present state — with menhirs lying or leaning — could result from ancient natural phenomena or human interventions, not documented in the available texts.
