Origin and history
Menthon Castle in Choisey is a building built in the early eighteenth century, typical of bourgeois architecture of this period in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It incorporates a house body with a chapel dated 1728, as well as an interior decor made around 1770. The park, evolving between the 18th and 19th centuries, completes this preserved ensemble, reflecting the aesthetic and functional transformations of the era.
In the second half of the 18th century, the castle underwent an internal reorganization, including the displacement of the chapel. Around 1830, new decorations were added, illustrating the continuous adaptation of the building to the tastes and needs of its occupants. This monument, classified and inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1993, retains all its original components: house, outbuildings, dovecote, court of honour, garden and park.
The castle of Menthon in Choisey is distinguished by its classic plan, with a garden centered on the lateral porch of the house body. Its history is marked by phases of renovation and beautification, especially in the nineteenth century, while preserving structural and decorative elements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today it reflects the architectural and social evolution of the regional elites during these periods.
Located at the address 22 rue d'Aval in Choisey (Jura), the castle is protected for its entire house body, as well as its outbuildings, dovecote, fence walls and garden. These protections, formalized by decree in 1993, underline its heritage importance in the region. The site, although less publicized than its Savoyard homonym, embodies a significant local architectural and historical heritage.
