Origin and history
The funeral cippe of Meynes is a vestige of Roman antiquity, classified as Historical Monument since 1955. This monument, located on Rue du Four in the village of Meynes (Gard), is distinguished by its epigraphic inscription dedicated to Rutilia Marcella. It is now integrated into the wall of a private house, demonstrating its reuse over the centuries.
The location of the tippe, although documented (11 rue du Four), remains approximated according to current geographic accuracy criteria. Its official classification in 1955 underlines its heritage importance, although its access is limited due to its integration into private property. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its status as a protected monument.
Roman funeral cupps, like Meynes', were used to honour the deceased and mark their burial. In the context of Roman Gaul, these monuments reflected funeral practices and the social organization of local communities. Their presence in urban or rural areas attested to Roman cultural influence in the region, now Occitanie.
