Origin and history

The Maison des Missionaires de la Croix de Sisteron is a building located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built mainly during the 4th quarter of the 17th century, it also underwent modifications or additions in the 19th century. This monument illustrates the religious and community architecture of this period, marked by the influence of missionary orders in the region.

The building has been listed as historic monuments since 1987, a recognition that underscores its heritage importance. The protection concerns in particular the chapel, identified under the cadastre AS 720. This official inscription preserves the architectural and historical characteristics of the site, while offering a witness to the local and religious history of Sisteron.

The house is located at 17 rue de la Mission, an address corresponding to a central area of the commune. Although sources indicate an approximate location close to (8 Mission Street), the official address recorded at the Merimée base remains the primary reference. The accuracy of this location is assessed as fair, which may reflect minor uncertainties about the exact boundaries of the monument or subsequent urban modifications.

This type of building, linked to missionary activity, played a key role in the spiritual and social life of local communities. In Sisteron, as in other cities in Provence, missionaries contributed to religious supervision, education, and sometimes charitable works. Their presence reflected the religious dynamics of the time, marked by the Counter-Reform and the efforts to Christianize or reaffirm faith in rural areas.

The house of the missionaries of the Cross is now owned by the municipality of Sisteron. This public management makes it possible to envisage various uses, such as cultural visits, exhibitions, or heritage-related activities. However, the available sources do not specify whether the monument is currently open to the public, rented for events, or transformed into another type of establishment such as guest rooms.
