Origin and history
The monastery of the Religious of Vienna, located in Toulouse, has its origins in the early seventeenth century, although its history dates back to a first chapel built in 1327. This initial building was granted to the Blue Penitents in 1576, after the founding of their brotherhood in the city. The Blue Penitents, an influential brotherhood of which several kings of France were members (from Louis XIII to Charles X), undertook a major reconstruction of the building.
In 1614 the Brotherhood purchased a building adjacent to the west, demolished the old chapel and erected the present building. The facade, characteristic of Toulouse classicism, is distinguished by its four ionic stone pilasters, contrasting with the brick wall. This frontispiece, crowned with a pediment and decorated with an oculus, embodies the religious architecture of the period.
The building, partially protected since 1972 (falls and roofs on the street), bears witness to the importance of the penitential brotherhoods in southwestern France. Its location at 10 rue du Lieutenant-Colonel-Pélissier, in the department of Haute-Garonne, makes it a key element of the Toulouse heritage. The accuracy of its location, however, remains poor, with a score of 5/10 depending on available sources.
