Origin and history

The cross of Montrol-Sénard is a hosannière cross, also called a cemetery cross, erected in the 18th century. It is distinguished by its quadrangular base resting on a triple rectangular ressaut, and its was composed of two stones held by metal staples. The monolithic cross, carved on one side, carries a Christ clothed in a short tunic, with hanging legs. The date of 1730 is engraved on the base, and the location of the INRI inscription is still visible at the top of the cross.

Classified as historical monuments on 21 March 1979, this cross is located in the cemetery of Montrol-Sénard in Haute-Vienne. It belongs to the commune and is precisely near the church, at 2 Place de l'École. Its architecture and sculptural details reflect the local artistic and religious practices of the 18th century, typical of the hosanrine crosses of the region.

The hosanrine crosses, often placed in cemeteries or near churches, served as a gathering place during religious processions, especially during Holy Week. In Montrol-Senard, as in other villages in Limousin, these monuments played a central role in community and spiritual life, marking the sacred space and recalling the presence of faith in the daily lives of the inhabitants. Their preservation reflects the importance attached to religious and funeral heritage in this rural area.
