Origin and history

The monument to Léon Chiris is a memorial building in Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes, built in the early twentieth century. It consists of a stone arch, a bronze bust of Léon Chiris placed on a pedestal, and a marble carved group representing an old woman in traditional costume and a girl with flowers. This allegorical monument celebrates both a local economic actor and the cultural values of the region.

Inaugurated in 1914, the monument is the result of a collaboration between several artists and craftsmen. The architect Léon Le Bel and his associate James Warnery designed the structure, while the sculptor Louis Maubert realized the figurative elements. The founder Eugène Rudier, entrepreneur Joseph Cresp and the company Guérin Frères (stone size) contributed to its realization. The project was initiated by François Carnot, although its exact role is not detailed in the sources.

The monument, classified entirely by decree of 23 July 2009, is now owned by Grasse municipality. It stands on Fragonard Boulevard, an iconic place in the city, known for its perfumery heritage. His style combines symbolism (allegories) and realism (portrait of Chiris), reflecting the artistic channels of the era.

Léon Chiris, to whom the monument pays tribute, was a great patron of perfumery and a local political figure. Its economic influence in the region, then booming olfactory, justifies this public commemoration. The choice of a sculpted group evoking transmission (old woman and child) may underline its industrial and family heritage.

The materials used — bronze for the bust, marble for the allegories, stone for the arch — illustrate the artistic techniques of the early twentieth century. The company Guérin Frères, specialized in stone carving, and the founder Rudier, renowned for his bronze work, guaranteed a lasting quality. The monument thus embodies both a personal tribute and a witness to local know-how.
