Origin and history

The monument to the dead of Basse-Terre is a cenotaph located in Guadeloupe, on the Place du Champ d'Arbaud. Raised in 1924 thanks to a public subscription, he paid tribute to the First World War soldiers. Its inauguration is part of a national commemoration, with the support of Governor Jocelyn Robert and local communities.

The monument was designed by the artist Hippolyte Marius Galy. It symbolizes the sacrifice of the Guadeloupees during the conflict in an island that was then marked by its status as a French colony. Its architecture and central location make it a major place of memory for the Lower-Terrian community.

Ranked as historical monuments by order of 1 March 2018, this monument illustrates the engagement of the ultramarine territories in the war effort. It also reflects the local dynamics of crowdfunding, involving State, General Council and municipalities to honour the disappeared.
