Origin and history

The Boisse-Penchot Dead Monument, located in Aveyron in the Occitanie region, was designed to honour the soldiers of the commune who died in the 20th century conflicts, including the 42 victims of the First World War and the 4 of the Second World War. He is distinguished by his pacifist approach, featuring a widow and her children laying a crown on a grave rather than a heroic soldier. This artistic choice reflects a desire for sober and humanist commemoration, centred on mourning and collective memory.

The monument, erected at the intersection of the rue des Deux-Ponts and access to the old bridge over the Lot, takes the form of a three-column portal. The central column supports a bronze bas-relief representing a mother accompanied by her two children, while the side columns carry marble plates engraved with the names of the missing soldiers. In the background, a female figure holding a branch reinforces the symbolism of peace and renewal. This monument is part of an artistic and memorial approach atypical for the era.

Worked by architect Ernest Grialou and sculptor Marc Robert, the monument was listed as a historical monument on 18 October 2018, alongside 41 other monuments to the dead in the Occitanie region, in recognition of its architectural, artistic and historical value. This official protection underscores its heritage importance, both local and regional, as well as its originality in the French commemorative landscape.

Located on a communal plot (section AC, parcel 325), the monument is owned by the city of Boisse-Penchot. Its location, outside the city centre, makes it a symbolic gathering point for memorial ceremonies. The listing of historical monuments guarantees its preservation and highlights its role in the transmission of the memory of 20th century conflicts.
