The monument to the dead of the war 1914-1918 in its entirety, with its gate and garden, located at the foot of the church (cad. AC 52, see plan annexed to the decree): inscription by order of 3 February 2015

Origin and history

The monument to the dead of Tardets-Sorholus is a discoidal stele erected as a tribute to the First World War soldiers. Located at the foot of the church built in the nineteenth century, it is distinguished by its circular shape and the representation of a hairy leaning on its rifle. This artistic choice reflects the national tribute to combatants, while integrating local elements.

The inscriptions in Basque that surround the disc underline the regional anchoring of the monument. This mix of patriotic symbols and Basque identity illustrates the dual dimension, both universal and local, of the commemoration. The stele is surrounded by a grid and a garden, forming a coherent protected complex since 2015.

Ranked as a historical monument, this building belongs to the commune of Tardets-Sorholus, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Its precise location, instead of the Church, makes it a central point of local collective memory. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair, based on available data.

The monument was included in the inventory of historical monuments by order of 3 February 2015. This protection concerns the entire stele, as well as its grill and garden. The site remains a place of recollection and memory for the community, while being an artistic and historical testimony of the post-war period.
