Origin and history

The Levroux Memorial to the Dead is dedicated to soldiers who died in World War I. Located in Place de la République, it consists of a central structure surrounded by a wrought iron gate, which is placed on a stone border. The whole, including its delimitation, was inscribed as a Historic Monument by decree of 21 December 2020, attesting to its heritage and memorial value for the commune.

The precise location of the monument, at the place called "Le Bourg" on the cadastral plot D2460, reflects its anchoring in the historic heart of Levroux. Owned by the commune, it symbolizes the duty of local memory, while integrating into the urban landscape of this town of the department of l'Indre, in the region Centre-Val de Loire. Its state of conservation and accessibility continue to be linked to municipal policies to enhance heritage.

Available data, from sources such as Monumentum, highlight the importance of this monument as a witness to the sacrifices made during the Great War. Although the archives do not specify the stages of its construction or its sponsors, its recent listing (2020) marks an official recognition of its role in collective memory. The grid and border, protected elements, add an artistic and functional dimension to the building.

Levroux, like many French communes, saw his monument to the dead become a place of recollection and commemorative ceremonies. These buildings, often erected between the two wars, meet a need for commemoration shared by local populations, marked by the human losses and social upheavals of the period. Their presence in public space also recalls the commitment of municipalities to the preservation of local history.

The location accuracy, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the databases, invites further verifications to refine its geolocation. Despite this minor uncertainty, the official address (16 Place de la République) and the Insee code of the municipality (36093) clearly identify the site. Its integration into the Merimée base also confirms its national heritage status.

Finally, the absence of any mention of opening to the public or associated services (guided tours, rental) suggests that the monument primarily fulfils a memorial and symbolic function. Its maintenance and development thus depend on the resources and priorities of the municipality of Levroux, in a department where monuments to the dead form a dense network of places of memory.
