Origin and history
The Condom Dead Monument, located in the Gers department in Occitanie region, is dedicated to the 266 soldiers of the commune who died in combat during the 20th century, mainly during the First World War. There is Place du Souvenir, close to the town hall, on an esplanade overlooking rue Jean-Jaurès and Avenue du Général-de-Gaulle. The building, accessible by a staircase, consists of a pedestal supporting a stone statue of a working hairy, equipped with its armament, framed by two columns. A wrought iron grid surrounds the whole. The inscription "To the fallen Condoms for the Fatherland and the Peace of the World", accompanied by the dates 1914-1918, adorns the base, also containing the names of the missing soldiers.
The monument is the work of sculptor Daniel-Joseph Bacqué and was inaugurated on 24 June 1923. It was listed as a historic monument on October 18, 2018, among 42 monuments to the dead in the Occitanie region recognized for their heritage value. This monument reflects the collective tribute paid to the victims of the wars, typical of the French communes after 1918, while illustrating the memorial art of the interwar period.
The precise location of the monument, Place du Souvenir in Condom (code Insee 32107), is confirmed by the Merimée and Monumentum bases. Owned by the commune, there remains a place of memory accessible to the public, symbolizing the duty of remembrance and the local impact of global conflicts. Its architecture, combining sobriety and solemnity, makes it a notable example of monuments to the deaths of the First World War in South-West France.
