Origin and history
La Pierre de la Chopinière is a menhir located in the municipality of Sudan, in the Loire-Atlantique region. This megalithic monument, dated from the Neolithic, is presented as a slab of ferrous shale measuring 6 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 0.50 meters in thickness. Currently lying on the ground, it reflects the architectural and ritual practices of the prehistoric societies of the region.
The menhir was registered as historic monuments by order of 17 March 1981, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Available sources, including the Merimée and Wikipedia database, confirm its protected element status and its precise location in the Loire-Atlantique department, under the Insee 44199 code. No additional information is provided on its original use or detailed archaeological context.
Megalithic sites, such as the Stone of La Chopinière, were often associated with symbolic, funeral or territorial functions in neolithic communities. Their location in the landscape reflected collective choices related to social organization and beliefs of the time. In Pays de la Loire, several other monuments of this type are listed, illustrating an ancient and structured human occupation.
