Origin and history

The monument to the dead of Touillon-et-Loutelet, located in the Doubs, is a granite obelisk of the Vosges erected in the 1st quarter of the 20th century. It is distinguished by its glass flame, enlightening the valley at night, and its inscription "Pax. To the defenders of justice, law, humanity. 1914...1918". This pacifist monument, designed by architect Paul Robbe, is set up in front of the washhouse and the school, symbolizing the link between peace and education, an idea carried by Mayor Louis Deleule.

The village, perched at 1,009 metres above sea level, had 94 inhabitants in 1921 and lost 4 soldiers during the First World War. Unlike the local tradition of a monument in the nearby cemetery, Louis Deleule, the socialist mayor, refused a religious location or a military representation. He collaborated with Paul Robbe, architect and veteran, known for his pacifist monuments around Pontarlier, such as those of Jougne or Métabief.

The original project, proposed between 1923 and 1927, was replaced by the present monument, the model of which is preserved by the town hall. The ensemble, composed of an obelisk emerging from a rock, false shells and a grid, evokes solemnity while celebrating life and peace. The monument, a communal property, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 19 December 2022, highlighting its unique heritage character.
