Origin and history

The Prades Memorial to the Dead is a commemorative work dedicated to First World War soldiers, located in the city cemetery, rue du Souvenir. Created by the sculptor Gustave Violet, it is distinguished by its integration into a funeral space, thus marking a symbolic link between collective memory and rest of the deceased.

Inaugurated on November 1, 1925, this monument was officially recognized for its heritage value by an inscription to historical monuments on October 18, 2018. This protection concerns the entire structure, including its precise location in the cemetery, as defined by the cadastral plans.

The monument is part of a regional commemoration dynamic, typical of the Eastern Pyrenees after the Great War. These buildings, often located in public or sacred places, played a central role in community life, serving as a gathering point for remembrance ceremonies and strengthening the local identity in the face of the traumas of war.

The exact location at the intersection of Remembrance Street and Clara Road (D35) reflects a desire for accessibility and visibility. Owned by the municipality of Prades, the monument illustrates the commitment of local communities to the preservation of historical memory, while offering an artistic testimony of the commemorative practices of the inter-war period.
