Origin and history

The monument to the dead of Marmande is located Place du 11-Novembre, opposite the station, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne. He was commanded by the city to honour the 342 Marman soldiers who died during the First World War, out of a population of 7,320 before the conflict. A contest was organized in 1921, and the realization was entrusted to the sculptor Raoul Lamourdedieu. The monument was inaugurated in 1922 and listed as a historic monument on October 21, 2014.

The monument consists of a central base surmounted by a statue entitled "The Kiss of Glory", representing a winged Victoire kissing a dying Hair. Two low wings, engraved with the names of the victims of 1914-1918, frame the base and bear the inscriptions "To Us Remember" and "To Us Immortality". Two crying and two standing poilus complete the set, installed in a public garden.

The sculptor Raoul Lamourdieu, assisted by Rabian, designed this solemn tribute, today owned by the commune. The monument illustrates the memory effort of the 1920s, when French cities erected buildings to perpetuate the memory of the missing soldiers. Its registration in 2014 highlights its heritage and artistic value.
