Origin and history

The Monument of Faith, located in Bennwihr in the Upper Rhine, was erected in 1924 by sculptor Charles Geiss. He paid tribute to the victims of the First World War and celebrated the loyalty of Alsace and Lorraine to France between 1870 and 1918. The monument depicts two women dressed in the traditional costumes of these regions, symbolizing their union and fidelity.

This monument was left in its 1944 state after the fighting of December 1944 and January 1945, which ravaged Bennwihr. These traces of war bear witness to the violent clashes that marked the region during the Second World War. Since 1996, the monument has been included in the inventory of historical monuments, protecting its base and structure.

Located in Place de la Mairie and Place de l'Église, the Monument de la Fidelité is an important place of memory for the municipality. It recalls not only the sacrifices of the soldiers, but also the resilience of the inhabitants to the conflicts that marked the history of Alsace. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage and symbolic importance.
