Origin and history

The Toulon Memorial to the Dead is a memorial building dedicated to the victims of the First World War. It is located in the town of Toulon, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, more precisely in the Var department. Built between August 1924 and June 1925, it was inaugurated on 28 June 1925. This monument is distinguished by its original architecture, in three-level pyramid, and its location facing the Toulon courthouse. It was designed by the sculptor Honoré Sausse, winner of a contest organized by the monument committee at the end of the war.

The monument presents a strong symbolic composition: seven Poilus figures and sailors aligned on a rectangular block, surmounted by a veiled woman. The latter, leaning its arms on a rectangular massif, embodies the allegory of France in mourning. She holds a shield in her left arm, reinforcing this interpretation. Two laurel falls, symbols of glory and memory, flow from the edges of the massif. The work is characterized by its monumentality and counting, making it an atypical realization among monuments to the dead of the period.

The monument to the dead of Toulon, including the surrounding gates, was listed as historical monuments by an order of 22 February 2010. This official protection underscores its heritage and artistic importance. The monument is owned by Toulon and is located in Gabriel-Péri Square, although some sources also mention an approximate address at 20 Boulevard Général Leclerc. Its state of conservation and precise location are monitored, as evidenced by the assessments available in the heritage databases.
