Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman mosaic of Saint-Paulien is a major archaeological vestige located in the commune of Saint-Paulien, Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is the only known testimony of the Roman presence in this department, stressing its local historical importance. Presently exposed to the archeological museum Michel Pomarat, installed in the chapel of the Penitents, it offers a rare overview of handicrafts and artistic techniques of the Gallo-Roman period in this region.
The mosaic was classified as historical monuments by an order of 28 June 1993, thus recognizing its exceptional heritage value. This classification guarantees its protection and conservation for future generations. Although little detailed information is available on its discovery or specific archaeological context, its exhibition in a local museum gives the public access to this unique heritage, while highlighting the Roman history of the Haute-Loire.
The Michel Pomarat Museum, which houses the mosaic, is located in a historic building, the Chapel of the Penitents, adding an additional dimension to the visit. This place combines architectural and archaeological heritage, offering an immersion in local history, from antiquity to modern times. The mosaic, as a classified object, also illustrates the efforts to preserve the heritage in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a region rich in remains of different eras.
