Origin and history

The castral motte of Saint-Ulrich is a monument located in the commune of Saint-Ulrich, in the Grand Est region. This type of structure, typical of the Middle Ages, was generally used as a fortified point to control a territory or protect a local population. Castral mots were often accompanied by wooden ditches and palisades, forming a primitive but effective defensive ensemble.

In the Greater East region, the castral mots were part of a network of fortifications linked to feudal organization. They played a key role in the social hierarchy, serving as a seigneurial residence or refuge for peasants in the event of conflict. Their presence attests to the strategic importance of the area, often located near communication routes or agricultural resources.
