Origin and history
The feudal motte of Noyelle-Vion is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). This site, dated from the Middle Ages, is a typical example of the local fortifications of this period, characterized by a motte (artificial bush) and an surrounding ditch. Its inscription in the Historic Monuments in 1980 underlines its heritage importance, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note of 5/10 depending on available sources).
Feudal mottes, such as Noyelle-Vion, were generally built between the 10th and 12th centuries to serve as defence and territorial control points. They were often associated with local lords or noble families seeking to assert their power in a region. In the context of the Hauts-de-France, these structures played a key role in feudal organization, marking the landscape with both military and symbolic elements.
The official protection of the moth and a portion of its ditch, by two decrees dated 1980 (29 May and 22 December), attests to its archaeological and historical value. However, practical information on visit or access remains limited in available sources. The approximate address, 14 Rue de l'Eglise in Noyelle-Vion, allows to locate the monument, but its precise location and current state are not detailed.
The department of Pas-de-Calais, where Noyelle-Vion is located, was a strategic area in the Middle Ages, marked by frequent conflicts and a highly hierarchical social organization. The feudal mottes were common elements of the landscape, reflecting the fragmentation of power among local lords. Their presence also illustrates the importance of defensive systems in a time when security was a major concern for rural communities.
