Origin and history

The feudal motte of the Château de Montreuil-l'Argillé is a medieval vestige dating from the first half of the 11th century. Located in the department of Eure, Normandy, this archaeological site illustrates the defensive architecture typical of the feudal era. The remains, partially preserved, have been protected since 1989 as historical monuments, covering the main enclosure and two lower courtyards of the castle.

The castle was originally the property of Heugon, a powerful knight (called potens miles), who also owned the castles of the Eagle, Écauffeur and Roche-Mabile. In 1025, these lands passed by marriage to Géré (or Giroie), a lord of high French and Breton nobility, allied to the Bellême and vassal of the Count of Mayenne. This transfer marked a period of influence for the Giroie family in the region.

The current remains, located south of the village of Montreuil-l'Argillé, include archaeological elements buried or in elevation. Their protection specifically covers cadastral plots AC 141 to 143 and 220, reflecting the historical significance of the site. The castle, although partially erased, remains a key testimony of Norman feudal organization in the Middle Central Ages.

The feudal motte is part of a network of fortifications controlled by local lords, playing a strategic role in the political and military dynamics of 11th century Normandy. Its inscription in historic monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its history linked to the great noble families of the time.
